How to Encourage Wildlife Into Your Garden

Having a garden that’s brimming with life really adds to the atmosphere and is lovely to watch up close and out of the window, but it’s also extremely important due to a decline in natural habitats, especially during the winter months which can be very hard for birds and other wildlife.

Here’s a few tips to encourage wildlife into your garden:

  • Provide Food & Shelter for Birds

To attract birds, your garden needs to be attractive to them all year round. A bird-friendly garden not only offers food but water, shelter, nesting sites and protection from predators. During winter, supplementary food can mean the difference between life and death for many birds, and the best way to provide easily accessible food for them is to buy a bird table or a bird feeder. Make sure you leave suitable food out for the birds – We stock a range of bird food if you’re unsure on what is okay to feed them. Don’t forget that birds also need fresh drinking water, so consider leaving a bowl out for them and keeping it topping up.

  • Grow Wildflowers

Wildflowers are a great way attract bees and butterflies, and research suggests they’re on course to be a big trend in 2021, meaning they will create a fantastic aesthetic while also being functional. Buddleia (Summer Lilac) is a particular favourite of butterflies, and native species with an open structured flower are good for attracting bees.

  • Create a Water Feature or Pond

A water feature or pond can diversify your garden ecosystem and will help attract different creatures such as frogs and dragonflies, as well as allowing you to keep fish. Plants like water lilies and broad leaf pond weed to develop your underwater habitat. Ponds and water features also make a pleasing addition aesthetically to any outdoor space.
